Did you know that it takes just three seconds for lice to transfer from one head to the next? No wonder why millions of kids need head lice removal services every year! Now that many kids are learning at home due to the pandemic, you might think that the head lice trends are changing. And they are. But not in the way you might think.

Here are five of the latest trends happening in the head lice world right now.

1. Lice cases continue to increase, despite the pandemic.

With people quarantining since March, one might assume that head lice cases would die down. After all, millions of kids are out of school and daycare, so wouldn’t this fix the problem? Not exactly. Head lice cases are on the rise, particularly in some parts of Texas, Louisiana, Kansas and California.

2. “Cluster cases” are most popular right now.

Rather than head lice spreading in schools, daycares and summer camps, there are more “cluster cases” popping up. Families are spending more time together, and this gives lice the opportunity to spread to everyone in the home. While head lice primarily affect children, we are now seeing more moms, dads, grandparents, aunts and uncles with cases.

3. Super lice are very much a real thing.

Super lice continue to be a problem for many families dealing with head lice. These tiny parasites look just like regular lice with one key difference: they are resistant to conventional head lice shampoos. This means that your family could go through every treatment on the pharmacy shelf with no success. But, this could be quickly changing, as you’ll see below.

4. New drugs are being approved by the FDA to treat lice.

Recently, a couple of new lotions were approved by the FDA to treat super lice. However, we encourage you to do your research, as the ingredients used in these products have risks. Over-the-counter lice products, including the latest ones, report side effects like skin burning, contact dermatitis, vomiting, hair color changes, rashes and irritation. They’re also not safe for children under 6 months old. Plus, there’s really no need to use harsh ingredients like this.

5. Wet combing is still the best defense.

As more states tighten up their COVID-19 restrictions, it’s important to continue monitoring your household for lice. Fortunately, you don’t need to mess with any harsh head lice products if you practice wet combing. Simply comb through your child’s hair after their bath or shower with a lice treatment comb once a week (or every couple of days if they’ve just been treated for lice).
