Here at My Hair Helpers, we see head lice all the time—nothing new for us! While these tiny pests can be itchy and annoying, they’re definitely not a reason to panic. What matters most is staying informed, especially during seasons when lice tend to be more active.
Believe it or not, Halloween is one of those times when head lice are extra busy.
Let’s take a closer look at why cases tend to rise in October, and what you can do to protect your family while still enjoying all the spooky fun.
Why Head Lice Are More Active Around Halloween
Every year, many head lice clinics and pediatric offices report an increase in lice cases during October. The main culprit? Costumes, masks, wigs, and hats.
When dozens of people try on the same accessories throughout the day, especially at pop-up Halloween shops or secondhand stores, it increases the chance that lice could spread. While lice can only survive 24–48 hours off the scalp, those wigs and hats get a lot of turnover during Halloween season, giving the critters more opportunities to find a new home.
Remember, lice are just trying to survive like anything else. They have tiny claws that help them cling tightly to hair, and they can transfer to a new host in just seconds. If one happens to be hiding in a dark, cozy wig, it won’t hesitate to crawl onto a new scalp looking for its next meal.
How to Steer Clear of Lice This Halloween
Halloween should be about candy and costumes—not itchy scalps! Here are a few simple ways to keep lice from crashing your spooky celebration:
-
Use a protective layer. If your child is trying on costumes or wigs, have them wear a swim cap underneath to prevent direct contact with shared items.
-
Bag it before you wear it. After buying a costume (especially a used one), place it in a sealed bag for 48 hours before wearing. This helps kill any lice that might still be hanging around.
-
Give it some heat. If the costume’s material allows, toss it in the dryer for 45 minutes on high heat—enough to take out lice and eggs.
-
Don’t share costumes or accessories. Remind your child not to share wigs, hats, masks, or hair accessories with friends at school or Halloween parties.
If Your Child Gets Lice—Don’t Panic!
If your child happens to bring home more than candy this Halloween, don’t worry—head lice are very manageable.
At My Hair Helpers, we offer in-home and in-salon appointments that utilize our safe, effective products made from natural ingredients. You can also purchase our DIY lice kits online if you prefer to address them at home.
We don’t recommend over-the-counter lice solutions, as many contain harsh chemicals and are becoming less effective against today’s lice.
